This month we\u00a0introduce judge #2,\u00a0Craig Barnes, current NZSDA vice president.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After flicking through the yellow pages Lynda\u00a0Barnes\u00a0happened across the Signwriters section. &#8220;What about signwriting?&#8221; she asked.\u00a0Then, a pimply faced teenager,\u00a0Craig\u00a0Barnes\u00a0replied &#8220;Signwriting? What the hell is that Mum?&#8221;\u00a0 It was\u00a0Craig&#8217;s 5th form year at Golden Bay High School.\u00a0Every student of that year was asked to think of a career that, potentially, he or she may pursue.\u00a0 The school would contact employers from around\u00a0the region to arrange a two week stay for the student.\u00a0The year was 1990. The signage company was small by today&#8217;s standards but, because of this,\u00a0Craig\u00a0was lucky enough to do so much more than just become\u00a0best friends with the broom. Those first two weeks ignited a passion for the industry which resulted in an apprenticeship in 1993.<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>Working for small Nelson based signage companies, high quality signage production has been a theme throughout his career.\u00a0 From traditional signage to computer\u00a0generated signs,\u00a0\u00a0Craig&#8217;s passion for the trade is evident in the work produced.\u00a0 With the advent of digital signage production,\u00a0Craig&#8217;s focus shifted to design.\u00a0 Becoming\u00a0co-owner of SignShop allowed\u00a0Craig\u00a0freedom of design which has resulted in over 15 NZSDA awards attributed to his design and production methods.\u00a0\u00a0Craig\u00a0trained our\u00a0latest apprentice of the year &#8211; Nick Lighfoot. \u00a0 \u00a0Craig&#8217;s expertise and passion for the industry makes him a perfect candidate on\u00a0the judging panel.<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>After selling the SignShop in late 2021,\u00a0Craig, his wife Claire and their three children have been focused on building a new family home in the North Canterbury region\u00a0while setting up a small signage and graphic design business called Alpine Creative.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last month we announced our first NZ Sign &amp; Display\u00a0Awards judge,\u00a0Andy Lowe .
